For the past seven years, the Ford F-150 Raptor has sat atop the off-road truck world. It's the closest one could get to matching the capability of purpose-built desert-conquering trophy trucks straight from the factory. Of course, that extreme capability came with a large physical footprint and a lofty price tag to match. But what if you could get a slightly scaled-down experience that offered a deluge of adrenaline with less imposing space requirements? For that, Ford turned to its midsize pickup platform.

Ford has confirmed a rip-roaring Ranger Raptor—already offered in select international markets—will finally make its way to US soil. While full details of the American-spec Ranger Raptor remain pending, there's still plenty to get excited about. Here's a quick look at a few highlights:

  • Naturally, the biggest upgrade will be to the powertrain. The standard Ranger's 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder (270 hp, 310 lb-ft) makes way for a prodigious twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with just shy of 400 horsepower (392 in global markets) and 430 pound-feet of torque.

  • To make full use of the extra muscle, the Ranger Raptor features a variety of off-road handling upgrades, including standard four-wheel drive, locking front and rear differentials, beefier suspension, increased ride height, a wider track width, and a set of gnarly 33-inch all-terrain tires.

  • In spite of its ultra-rugged character, the Ranger Raptor offers an array of creature comforts to make your time behind the wheel more accommodating—like leather/microsuede combination seats with secure bolstering, heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and more. You can also expect a large touchscreen with Ford's latest SYNC 4 infotainment system and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
